$212m Queensland casino hotel looks to future in design

A Chinese futurist architect has presented a design for a A$250 million (US$212.5 million) hotel and casino on Queensland's Gold Coast, and has already sparked concern among local residents over its environmental impact.

Known as the Sea Pearl, the 300 room hotel outline by Jianping Zheng, who has designed over 200 theme parks and hotels in China, is shaped as a pearl. Jianping is backed by Marie Stephens Properties and sponsored in Australia by the Australia China Chamber of Commerce.

The floating hotel development would include shopping malls, restaurants and a casino with an outdoor sightseeing deck, and swimming pool. Presidential suites would also be available alongside the main hotel together with an underwater tunnel.

The development is hoping new gaming laws and new licenses in Queensland will enable the green light for the development at the Gold Coast Integrated Resort and Cruise Ship Terminal in southeastern Queensland.
