ED attaches properties of Santiago Martin’s associate

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has attached the assets of N. Jayamurugan, an associate of Santiago Martin, in connection to a Sikkim lottery scam, local media reports.

Martin, his associate and various companies faced a federal probe last year by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for illegal sale of lotteries, not returning unsold tickets to the state government and the rigging of lottery winners.

The attachment follows an investigation which established the manipulations done by Martin and Jayamurugan lead to unlawful financial gains and thus, losses to the government of Sikkim.

Through a provisional order issued on February 9, the ED has attached 180.8 acres of land  worth Rs.16.5 crore (US$2.5 million), which was acquired by nine companies where Jayamurugan had invested.

According to the investigation, it is understood that proceeds from the lottery scam were used in acquiring the properties.
