Illegal UnionPay transactions reach $22.5 mln in first five months

Illegal transactions involving UnionPay terminals hit 180 million patacas ($22.5 million) from January to mid-May this year, news agency Lusa reported. As a result, UnionPay International missed out on MOP 360,000 in fees. According to the report, traders are supposed to pay commission of 1.4 percent to parties involved in UnionPay transactions, while UnionPay International receives 0.2 percent of that amount.

The Portuguese news agency quotes the police as saying they have identified 41 mainlanders suspected of making such transactions.
