Adelaide Casino defends exemption

Adelaide Casino has defended its exemption from new state rules that restrict entry between 3am and 7am starting October 1 to try to reduce alcohol-related violence. General manager David Christian said as a 24-hour entertainment venue, the SkyCity Entertainment Group Ltd.-owned casino spends "more than A$6 million each year on visitor and staff safety, host responsibility and security operations". He said the casino generates less than 2 percent of its revenue from alcohol sales. Some pubs and nightclubs have attacked the casino's exemption, saying it will merely make it a wee-hour magnet for drunks. The casino unsuccessfully sought exemption from a requirement that drinks ordered between 4am and 7am be served in tempered or polycarbonate cups.
