Aichi governor gets behind Tokoname IR bid

On Tuesday, Aichi Governor Hideaki Omura announced that he would be establishing an experts’ research group with an eye toward supporting Tokoname city’s possible bid for an IR license.

The first meeting is scheduled to be held this week, Thursday, August 3.

On July 7, Aichi Governor Omura had received an appeal from the Tokoname City Council, and the creation of the research group represents the governor’s speedy and affirmative reply.

Speaking at a press conference, Governor Omura stated, “We aim to become an international tourism capital that can attract international conferences and other events. If we have an IR, our competitiveness would be enhanced. I want to find out if this is something which can be realized.”

Tokoname City is host to Chubu Centrair International Airport. Under current plans this artificial island is scheduled to open an international exhibition hall in September 2019. The local government is also planning to build hotels and other facilities on the island.

Local leaders hope that since the airport island includes no residential communities, that anti-casino protests would be muted as compared to other possible locations.
