Alipay to disable accounts involved in gambling

China payment provider Alipay will permanently disable accounts repeatedly involved in gambling, according to the company’s Weibo post, which was picked up by CLSA.

The bans are part of Alipay’s latest effort to crack down on illegal activities including gambling.

According to the post, users who were caught for the first time will be banned from sending messages and participating in social groups, and then have their money transactions suspended for 30 days, before disabling their accounts permanently.

For any gambling transactions involving more than CNY 10,000 (US$1,540), or 50 people, Alipay will inform the police.

Over 1,000 accounts have been found so far.
