Assistant Public Prosecutor-General to head Macau gambling regulator

The new head of Macau's gambling regulator will be Assistant Public Prosecutor-General Paulo Martins Chan, local media reported citing Secretary for Economy and Finance Lionel Leong Vai Tac.

He will replace Manuel Joaquim das Neves, who plans to step down on Nov. 25th. Chan will take up the new post as head of the Gambling Inspection and Coordination Bureau on Dec. 1st.

“After approval by Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On this morning and the consent of Prosecutor-General Ip Son Sang, the Office of Secretary for Economy and Finance will appoint Mr. Paulo Martins Chan as the new director of the Gaming Inspection and Co-ordination Bureau,” the Secretary told reporters on the sidelines of a public event on Friday.

Chan was reportedly chosen due to his experience in the Public Prosecutor's Office, legal knowledge and language proficiency. He will be tasked with improving the territory's gaming regulation amidst the worst slump in gambling revenue since the industry in Macau was liberalized.
