Authorities to investigate bitcoin gambling site

The Australian media watchdog is investigating an Australian-registered sports gambling website which allows punters to place bets with bitcoin, local media reports.

The betting operator - JustBet, is registered by the Christmas Island Domain Administration (CIDA).

The website offers live betting on AFL, AFLX, A-League and other Australian sports. It also offers live and pre-match wagering on international sports as well as online casino.

However, despite its links to Australian sports, the site’s IP address suggests it is based in Costa Rica.

Legal experts said the site is in clear breach of the Interactive Gambling Act, which prohibits the offering of these types of gambling to Australian punters.

Earlier this week, Australian Independent MP Andrew Wilkie called on the Christmas Island Domain Administration to act immediately and shut down the site.

Following Mr Wilkie’s outcry, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) announced it is investigating the site for breaches of the Interactive Gambling Act.
