Balance between gaming and non-gaming essential

Macau needs to find the right balance between gaming and non-gaming offerings to achieve sustainable long-term growth of the gaming industry, according to the director of the Policy Research Office (GEP).

Director Lao Pun Lap was speaking in a TDM radio programme called ‘Macau Forum’, discussing the MSAR Five-Year- Development-Plan.

“The city’s development of gaming and non-gaming elements cannot be compromising each other; instead, both need to be complementary to one another,” said Lao during the radio programme.

The GEP head said in the past, the focus on both elements was imbalanced and placed the onus on new casino resorts to add more non-gaming offerings to their developments.

In May, the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) estimated non-gaming revenue could reach MOP 112 billion by 2025, in a newly presented tourism plan.

The ‘Macau Tourism Industry Development Plan’, presented by the MGTO, focuses on increasing tourist visitation, increasing the number of budget hotels, expanding the waterfront area and pushing up non-gaming revenue, as well as attracting more diversified visitors.
