Bangalore High Court rules poker is a game of skill

The Karnataka High Court in Bangalore has ruled that playing poker is a game of skill and no license is required for gamblers playing in recreational clubs in a move hailed as a triumph for the skilled gaming industry in India.

The ruling, which follows a series of raids and arrests of clubs across Bangalore for arranging poker games, also directed police not to interfere with lawful activities of the clubs. The ruling comes as the Delhi High Court mulls a decision on whether poker is a game of skill and could be played for stakes. However, media reports warned that the Bangalore court has not ruled on the matter of skill in depth and therefore the court’s decision may have limited applicability.
