Barriere ventures into online with Betconstruct

French casino group Barriere has become the latest bricks and mortar casino to tap into online gaming, entering into a partnership with Betconstruct to launch BarriereBet.

The unit will offer sports betting, with plans to add horse racing and poker.

BarriereBet will be available on desktop and mobile from Sept. 16 and will operate on BetConstruct’s Sportsbook.

“The online gaming market is a new axis of development which will allow the Group to consolidate its positions and promote its brands, as well as increase our brand awareness toward our new players and retain our land-based Casino customers,” said Dominique Desseigne, Chairman and CEO of Barrière Group.

Barrière Group operates 28 casinos, a gaming club, 18 hotels and some 140 restaurants and bars in France.

The casino operator, which had also been seeking a license in Japan, is joining land-based rivals in tapping into the igaming sector at a time when the Covid-19 crisis has highlighted the vulnerability to physical properties.

New Zealand’s SkyCity Entertainment launched an online unit based out of Malta last year, which is already turning a profit. Gaming giant Genting has also been expanding its online operations out of Europe through its GentingBet brand.
