Beijing Imperial Palace shuts down for six months

The Macau Government Tourist Office (MGTO) has ordered the temporary closure of Beijing Imperial Palace Hotel (formerly known as New Century Hotel) for a period of six months.

According to a release on the government website, the decision was made as the hotel “committed serious administrative irregularities and failed to carry out essential fire safety measures.”

“MGTO has reason to believe that it would cause serious or irreparable damage to the public if the Office did not adopt any provisional measures,” it added.

During the temporary closure, the hotel will not be allowed to operate for business, but can apply for temporary entry in order to conduct the necessary works to rectify its faults.

On Sunday, Amax International Holdings Ltd, which holds 24.8 percent equity interests in Greek Mythology casino, announced in a filing that while the hotel will be temporarily closed, the casino will be allowed to continue operations. However, visitor numbers may suffer as a result.

Beijing Imperial Palace Hotel opened in Macau in 1992. The hotel owns over 500 rooms to date.

MGTO director Senna Fernandes said this is the first time in Macau that a five-star hotel has been closed down temporarily by the government.
