Calls for Mizoram lottery probe intensifies

Mizoram’s main Opposition party Mizo National Front has intensified its calls for an investigation into the lottery scandal which allegedly led to Rs 11,808.8 crore (US$1.7 billion) in tax losses from 2012 to 2015, The Assam Tribune reports.

“The people of Mizoram are closely watching the Congress Government’s reaction to our demand for a CBI probe. If the Congress Government does not take any positive action, we will decide our next course of action, which may be a bandh or picketing,” MNF president Zoramthanga said.

In January, Mizoram-based NGO - People’s Right to Information and Development Society of Mizoram (PRISM), an anti-corruption watchdog, submitted a letter to the Assembly, saying the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India’s Performance Audit report found several irregularities in the state lottery.

While the four distributors of paper and online lotteries in the state were supposed to deposit Rs 11,834.2 crore during the period, they deposited only Rs 25.5 crore using a tax loophole.
