Casino Management Board members facing smooth confirmation process

Japanese opposition parties appear to be accepting a smooth confirmation process for the government’s five nominees to serve on the Casino Management Board, the independent agency to be established on January 7, 2020.

While it is unlikely that the opposition parties will actually vote in favor of the nominees, they are not attempting to stall the process. The five nominees are expected to be approved in the House of Representatives by the ruling coalition and some others on Friday, sending the personnel plan on for final consideration in the House of Councillors.

Michio Kitamura, a former inspector general of legal compliance at the Defense Ministry, has been nominated to chair the five-person committee. The other four nominees are Hiroyuki Ujikane, former chief of the National Tax Agency's Nagoya Regional Taxation Bureau; Michiko Watari, a psychiatrist; Noriko Endo, professor of risk governance at the graduate school of Keio University; and Tateshi Higuchi, a former superintendent general of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department.

These nominees must be approved by both chambers of the Diet by the end of the current session on December 9.
