Casino workers wage rises, dealer numbers fall


The total number of people working in Macau’s gaming sector fell by 0.8 percent at the end of the fourth quarter last year, with dealer numbers dropping by 2.4 percent, though wages were higher.

According to figures from the government’s Statistics and Census Service the sector had 55,794 full-time employees and 24,039 dealers. The figures exclude junket promoters and associates.

In December, the average earnings, excluding bonuses stood at MOP21,990 ($2,748), up by 1.7 percent. Dealer wages gained 0.3 percent to MOP18,840.

Job vacancies totalled 555 at the end of the fourth quarter of 2016, up by 93 year-on-year. Most of the vacancies were for clerks and service and sales workers.

According to the survey of Manpower Needs and Wages of the gaming sectors, about 30 percent of the jobs available required work experience, with 94.8 percent requiring Mandarin and 43.6 percent needing English.

The survey found a total of 662 new workers were hired, up 76.1 percent from the same quarter a year ago. The employee recruitment rate at 1.2 percent and the job vacancy rate, 1 percent were slightly higher than the year earlier, while the employee turnover rate at 1.4 percent was down by 0.4 percentage points. The government said the indicators point to relative stability in the human resources situation at the gaming industry.
