China Lottery sales jump amidst World Cup fever

China lottery sales jumped 52.7 percent in July to RMB37.2 billion ($6.05 billion) fuelled by a gain in the mainland’s Sports Lottery sales, helped by World Cup fever.Sports Lottery sales almost doubled, gaining 93 percent to RMB19.8 billion, according to figures from the Ministry of Finance.Welfare lottery sales increased by 23.5 percent in July from the same period a year ago to RM17.4 billion.

It’s the second straight month of strong gains for China’s lottery market, fuelled by World Cup related gambling. The distraction of the tournament was also blamed for a downturn in gross gambling revenue in Macau's casinos during the month.Among Chinese provinces and cities, Tianjin led the upsurge in July, while Jiangsu, Shanghai, Zhejiang and Jiangxi also posted large increases, according to the MOF.For the first seven months, China's lottery sales rose 23.9 percent year on year to 215.6 billion yuan.
