China to crack down on rural gambling

Authorities in China have launched a campaign to crack down on gambling in rural areas ahead of the Lunar New Year holidays, Xinhua reports.

The campaign will focus on “mafia-style” gangs involved in illegal gambling activities, according to a circular released on Wednesday by three-law enforcement departments.

"Gambling is drawing in people who have received demolition compensation and the left-behind family members of migrant workers," the document said.

Local authorities have been asked to mobilize the public to report gambling crimes, and to strengthen investigation into online gambling.
