CNMI lawmakers to decide on Alter City land lease Friday

Lawmakers in the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands will convene on Friday to decide whether to approve a land lease needed for Macau’s Alter City Group to begin building a casino on the island of Tinian.

Alter City is proposing to develop 155 hectares of public lands at Puntan Diablo on Tinian. In the CNMI, any public land lease exceeding 5 hectares requires approval of the lawmakers.

Once the lease is approved, Alter City will immediately work with the regulatory agencies on permits, as well as looking into the issue of closing the dump site situated within the area of the lease.

Alter City signed the land lease accord with the CNMI Department of Public Lands last month for a $360-million casino resort.

The project is scheduled for completion in 12 years and will be built in three phases. Alter City Group plans 1,500 hotel rooms, a water park, an 18-hole golf course, casino facilities, and related tourism amenities.

The signed land lease is for 25 years, with an option to extend for 15 more years for a total of 40 years.

Alter City Group still has to apply for a casino license.
