Cricket Australia holds talks with unregulated offshore bookmakers

Australia’s national cricket body, Cricket Australia has held its first discussions with several offshore operators in an attempt to head off match-fixing concerns for the upcoming Big Bash League.

Over AU$3 billion (US$2.1 billion) could be bet on this season’s Big Bash League, if current momentum continues.

Local sources said that Cricket Australia held talks with Philippines’ based SBOBet, and Caribbean-based Pinnacle Sports in order to understand the level of wagers they have been taking on the Big Bash as well as identifying suspicious bets in a bid to stamp out concerns around match fixing and corruption.

While these companies do not fall within Australian laws and jurisdiction, the cricket body is hopeful that opening lines of communication with the operators are the right steps towards protecting the integrity of the game.
