Crossbenchers to put anti-gambling controls back on agenda

Senator Nick Xenophon and the Tasmanian independent MP Andrew Wilkie have vowed to use their key crossbench positions in the new parliament to put pokies and gambling ad controls back on the federal agenda.

Among the policies include a mandatory A$1 maximum bet on poker machines, and the banning of sports betting advertising during G-rated television broadcasts.

“We will be planning a whole series of measures, both in the parliament and outside the parliament, to deal with the issue of gambling reform and, in particular, one issue that has resonated throughout the community and that is on the issue of sports betting advertising,” Xenophon said on Thursday.

The policies may be used as a bargaining chip for the new government, in exchange for getting policies through as the Coalition government does not control the Senate.
