Crown needs more supervision: VIC Auditor-General

Victoria’s gaming regulator has been slammed by the state’s auditor general for failing to keep close enough supervision of the Crown Casino in Melbourne, local media reports.

The report released on Wednesday by the Victorian Auditor-General found that inspectors from the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation (VCGLR) were "not paying sufficient attention to key areas of risk in the casino's operations".

"[The commission's] compliance division has not applied a level of focus on the casino that reflects its status and risk as the largest gaming venue in the state," Auditor-General Andrew Greaves said.

Much of the oversight was due to VCGLR’s use of rotating compliance inspector teams, instead of dedicated permanent teams, which led to less than regular internal auditing.

“Its current approach is not adequately risk based or purposeful and ... many important activities have been undertaken only sporadically,” said the auditor-general in its report.

It is understood that the VCGLR has recognized the issues and as accepted the report’s recommendations.
