CrownBet under investigation by gaming watchdog

Sports betting agency CrownBet is under investigation by the New South Wales gaming watchdog over its latest advertising campaign offering rewards for customers, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.

The inquiry comes as rival sports betting companies step up their advertising battle ahead of next weekend's major rugby and football grand finals and the start of the lucrative spring racing season, which attracted wagers of nearly A$2.8 billion ($1.9 billion) last year.

The Office of Liquor, Gaming & Racing is investigating the promotion "The Game Just Changed" to determine whether it has breached regulations prohibiting licensed wagering operators from publishing advertising that offers NSW residents any credit, voucher or reward as an inducement to participate in gambling or open a betting account.

The CrownBet advertisement, which has been in newspapers, online and on social media and is now under investigation, says: "Every time you place a bet, you'll earn CrownBet rewards points to redeem at Crown Resorts. There's nothing like it in sports betting. Start earning now".
