Debtor database operational as early as Jan

Macau’s junket-proposed debtor database system could be established as early as this month, according to Kwok Chi Chung in an interview with Macau Business Daily.

Kwok, who serves as the president of the Macau Association of Gaming and Entertainment Promoters, said the system has already passed the trial stage and is now awaiting final approval from the government.

The debtor database first came to light last year in May, after the DICJ confirmed it was looking into the possibility of setting up a database of people who owe overdue debts related to credit issued for gambling.

During the MGS Entertainment Show, Kwok noted the database would help VIP junket operators prevent overlapping lending, and thus reducing the risk of bad debt.

Speaking to local press at the time, Kwok also noted the database will be operated by the industry itself.
