Echo says Brisbane proposal to generate 8,000 jobs

Echo Entertainment says its proposal for a casino development in downtown Brisbane would generate 8,000 jobs once complete and attract 1.4 million visitors in the first year.

In a filing with the Australian Stock Exchange, the company said about 2,000 jobs would be created during the construction phase.

It said the additional tourist numbers would close about 25 percent of the projected gap between current Queensland tourism numbers and the government’s target for the next decade.

Echo has partnered with Hong Kong’s Chow Tai Fook Enterprises and Far East Consortium to bid for a license for the Queen’s Wharf site. It is going head to head with a consortium led by James Packer’s Crown Resorts, which includes China’s Greenland Holdings.

The government is expected to announce a winner in the first half of this year.

Echo says its development would include five luxury hotels, including a Ritz Carlton and Rosewood property, more than 50 restaurants and bars, an infinity pool, a moonlight cinema and 12 football fields of public event space.

Echo, which already runs a casino in central Brisbane, says that property will be turned into the Ritz Carlton hotel and the casino moved to a new building. It aims to blend modern architecture with the heritage buildings already in place.

The company says its plans will have a “transformational” impact on Queensland’s image and liveability, as well as the state’s economy.

As well as the Brisbane license, the company is offering two licenses for integrated resorts in regional locations, which are currently going through the approvals process.
