Cambodia’s Education Ministry secretary of state, Sar Sokha has denied allegations of backing illegal gaming operators, local media reports.
Mr. Sokha on Monday said that in the midst of ongoing crackdowns on illegal online gaming, a group of people have circulated rumours which named him and other high-level government officials as being behind their businesses.
He has requested the National Police chief General Neth Savoeun, National Military Police commander General Sao Sokha, and Kirth Chantharith, the director-general of the Ministry of Interior’s General Department of Immigration to investigate the rumors.
“The accusations and rumours are tricks they are using to mislead the authorities and to protect their illegal businesses,” he said. “They are mocking law enforcement and the authorities. This is a criminal offence that must be penalized,” he said.
He has urged authorities to identify those involved and take prompt action against those operating illegal online gambling businesses.
