Fire at Galaxy Macau prompts evacuation of 6,000 workers

About 6,000 workers had to be evacuated after a fire broke out of Galaxy Macau’s Phase 2 extension, which is currently under construction.

The blaze began on the roof of the 36-storey building after a decoration caught light from sparks from welding tools being used nearby.

No one was injured in the incident, though construction and decorative materials were damaged and the outer walls near the roof were blackened. Phase 2 is scheduled for completion mid-year and will add a further 1,350 five-star hotel rooms targeting higher value customers.

Analysts expect the opening of the extension, coupled with the subsequent launch of Melco Crown Entertainment’s Studio City resort to kick start gambling revenue in Macau.
