Fixing scandal plagues IPL

 

Prosecutors filed a 571-page charge sheet naming 39 people for involvement in the Indian Premier League spot-fixing scandal, including wanted gangsters Dawood Ibrahim and Chota Shakeel. The prosecutors requested that bail be revoked for star cricketer Shanthakumaran Sreesanth and 20 others previously released. Ten of the 39 charged remain at large, with several believed to be in Pakistan.

Meanwhile, the Bombay High Court threw out the findings of a panel formed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India to investigate possible wrongdoing by the Rajasthan Royals, Sreesanth's team, and its owners and the Chennai Super Kings and team official Gurunath Meiyappan. The court directed the board to set up a new panel. Nevertheless, board president N Srinivasan, Meiyappan's father-in-law, moved to return to duties after stepping aside during the panel's probe.

Separately, Delhi police filed a 300-page charge sheet against six people allegedly involved in a 2000 match fixing scandal, including late South African captain Hansie Cronje and five bookies. Cronje's father said he was considering legal action against the police.
