Galaxy Macau to pay special bonus, following employee complaints

Macau casino operator Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd. will pay its staff a one-off “special gift” of MOP2,888 (US$360) on Feb. 18, following complaints that the discretionary bonus did not meet expectations, according to Macau Business Daily.

The special bonus will be paid on Feb. 18. In addition, a previously announced special bonus of one month’s salary and tips, if applicable will be paid in July, the company said. The operator also referred to a Special Bonus Award, which was announced in 2014, where company shares equal to three times employees’ salary were offered under the plan titled Special Share Award. The bonuses will be effective on Dec. 31, 2017, but forfeited if the employee leaves the company or is given notice on or before the payment date.

Lei Kuok Keong, vice-director of local labour union Forefront of Macau Gaming (FMG), said workers at Galaxy are still unhappy with the bonus, saying employees feel the Special Bonus still doesn’t amount to one basic month's salary, which is the regular bonus.

Keong added some members of the labour union reported that employees from other satellite casinos were very disappointed, as they were not entitled to the scheme.
