Galaxy to break ground on “Maldives-style” Hengqin resort next year

Galaxy Entertainment will break ground on a luxury Maldives-style resort on Hengqin island next year, local media cited deputy chairman Francis Lui Yiu Tung as saying.

The project will be divided into three phases and will take seven to eight years to complete.

“Hengqin is a place that Macau people should cherish as its future law, tax as well as culture will be similar as those in Macau. [Hengqin] will offer more opportunities for development, which young people in Macau should grab,” he was cited as saying.

China has designated the island a special economic zone, with a focus on leisure and light industry. Gambling will not be permitted, but given its location bordering Macau the zone is expected to see substantial development from the territory’s casino operators eager to add more affordable hotel capacity.

The border gate from Hengqin emerges into Cotai and has recently expanded hours facilitating access.
