Gambler loses court bid to avoid Marina Bay Sands debt


Marina Bay Sands casino won a S$240,868 ($187,782) judgment, plus interest and legal costs, against gambler Lester Ong, who had sought to avoid paying back credit the Las Vegas Sands Corp.-owned casino extended him by arguing that he no longer qualified as a "premium player" entitled to credit when the casino gave it to him. His argument was that he had withdrawn the S$100,000 deposit required to qualify for premium status under Singapore regulations. The case is the first the casino has brought to court in Singapore.
