Gambling addiction bill set to become law this week

The ruling coalition has reportedly decided to enact the Basic Bill on Gambling Addiction Countermeasures this week, after a short debate in the House of Councillors.

There are two competing bills under consideration, the bill jointly proposed by the two ruling coalition parties and the Osaka-based Japan Innovation Party, and a rival bill proposed by the opposition, led by the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan. It is, however, only the former which has the votes for passage.

The bill will require the government to draw up more detailed policies to combat gambling addiction, including the establishment of a specialized medical system to treat addicts.

The ruling coalition bill passed the House of Representatives on May 25.
