Gaming crime goes up: PJ

Macau’s Judiciary Police (PJ) has revealed crimes related to gaming have increased 33 percent in the first five months of the year, local media reports.

Director Chau Wai Kuong made the remarks during an award ceremony commemorating the 56th anniversary of the Judiciary Police at the PJ headquarters in Zape.

According to Chau, a major increase in gaming related crimes were seen in loan-sharking and illegal detentions due to non-payment of gaming debts, which increased as much as 60 and 200 percent respectively between June 2015 and May 2016.

However the PJ director said there was no reason for social concern as most victims of the crimes were non-locals and therefore “didn’t threaten… community security,” he said.

However, he did add that there was a 33 per cent increase in the number of reported gaming-related cases in the first five months of the year, from 571 cases in the same period last year to 660 cases.
