The gross value added that the gaming sector contributed to the overall economy of the Macau SAR has dropped sharply by 51.6 percent year-on-year to MOP30.3 billion ($3.76 billion) in 2022, according to the city's Gaming Sector Survey 2022.
The survey, published by the Macau Statistics and Census Bureau (
DSEC) reported that the gross surplus of the gaming sector before taxes were deducted witnessed a significant drop of 72.8 percent year-on-year to MOP11.5 billion ($1.4 billion) in the previous year.
The survey focuses on gaming activities, and gathered data from 9 enterprises involved in gaming operations, excluding data on hotel, retail and other businesses operated by these firms.
Additionally, the total receipts of the
gaming sector dropped by 49.2 percent year-on-year to MOP46.2 billion ($5.7 billion), with receipts from games of chance specifically declined by 51.5 percent to MOP42.1 billion ($5.2 billion).
The total expenditure of the gaming sector went down by 24.7 percent year-on-year to MOP40.3 billion ($4.9 billion), which was primarily driven by a substantial 66.6 percent decrease in expenditure on goods purchases, commissions, and customer rebates.
The number of full-time workers employed in the gaming sector in the city also dropped by 5 percent year-on-year to 52,174 workers in 2022.
At the same time, Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF) of the sector totaled MOP4.36 billion ($540.4 million) in 2022, down by 83.5 percent year-on-year, with buildings & other constructions representing about 73.6 percent of the total.
