Genting Las Vegas to begin construction 17Q3

Genting Group’s proposed Chinese-themed resort in Las Vegas is set to begin construction within the next few months, and is looking at an opening in 2020, local media reports.

The newly appointed president of Resorts World Las Vegas, Edward Farrell was speaking to Las Vegas Review Journal in an exclusive interview this week.

Farrell said around 1,000 construction workers are set to be onsite by 2018, with tower cranes to be installed over the next 90 days in order to begin work on the casino podium and hotel towers.

“We’ve gotten very close to the end of the design phase to a point where we’re comfortable moving forward to mobilize construction,” said Farrell.

Once the cranes are in place, work will begin on two room towers, one with 1,800 room capacity, and the other with 1,400. Farrell said they will most likely employ a staggered opening.

“We’re probably a good year and a half to two years away from it really taking form as these projects go,” Farrell said. “Probably two years from now, you’re going to start to see this project really take shape, the exterior of the tower starts to get put in place and the front and the podium will start taking shape.”

Farrell said the delay in construction was a result of a decision to overhaul the design of the resort to better cater to today’s market.

“We’ve gone back and forth on a lot of design elements,” he said. “At one point, it was really traditional, kind of an ancient Chinese Forbidden City look. We ended up moving away from that for a couple of reasons. We think the modern Chinese elements are more appealing to people nowadays, just more exciting. It definitely has an Asian feel and theme, but it’s more of an Asia today theme.”
