Global IR operators train eyes on Cairns

Cambodia-based NagaCorp recently sent a high-level delegation to Australia's Sunshine Coast, suspected to be scouting for IR development opportunties in the Maroochydore City Centre, local media reports.

According to Sunshine Coast Daily, the delegation from NagaCorp travelled to the coast for a two-and-a-half hour fly-in, fly-out visit. It did not specify the timing of this visit.

Included in the visiting party was NagaCorp owner Dr Chen Lip Keong and Timothy McNally, who serves as the chairman. Also part of the party was Gary Andrews, business development director of China Railway Engineering Corporation and Paul Steelman, founder of Steelman Partners.

The local government and CBD developer SunCentral however did not share any details of the visit, except for what was available publicly.

In a written statement to Sunshine Coast Daily, SunCentral CEO John Knaggs said it had received interest from multiple companies since EOIs opened for the core commercial precinct in the Maroochydore City Centre.

"There has been strong interest in the new CBD and meaningful discussions are continuing with numerous parties," said Knaggs.

Treasurer Curits Pitt said the increase in interest in Carins came after Aquis pulled the plug on its casino plans at Yorkey’s Knob.

“I’ve indicated that in my view there is a very strong interest in Cairns and again a very strong opportunity for something to happen in Far North Queensland,” he said.
