Goa minister open to legalizing Matka

Francis D’Souza, Goa’s law minister, suggests he’s open to legalizing the popular game of matka, given gambling on a far larger scale is already available in the state.

“I feel legalising matka is one of the options and it has to be tried since we can’t end the problem,” D’Souza was cited as saying.

He said questions are repeatedly asked as to why gambling on a big scale is permitted by law at the casinos, but matka is not.

The state government need not wait for a central legislation to legalise matka. The state government can do it, said the law minister.

Matka gambling or satta is a form of lottery and is highly popular across India. It originally started as a game involving betting on the opening and closing rates of cotton on the New York Cotton Exchange.
