Golden Week visitation up 7.2 percent in 2018

Visitor arrivals to Macau during the October Golden Week rose 7.2 percent year-on-year, reaching 890,000 visitors, according to data released by the Macao Government Tourism Office on Monday.

According to the data, the number of Mainland China visitors rose 14 percent to 734,000 in the period, while visitors from Hong Kong and Taiwan fell 2.7 percent (101,000) and 23.6 percent (12,000) respectively.

International visitors from other markets totaled 45,000, down 33.6 percent.

The MGTO said that the surge in visitor arrivals during this period was higher than expected, possibly due to “further-enhanced regional transport network and the rich diversity of local festivals and cultural events.”

“In addition to other favorable factors such as local cuisines and great weather throughout the holiday, more travelers were motivated to visit Macao,” it added.

On the other hand, Macau hotel establishments recorded a slight decline in average occupancy rate during the period, reaching an occupancy rate of 92 percent, down 0.6 percent.
