Government proposes casino chip AML reporting requirements

The Japanese government leaked to the media on Thursday that operators are likely to be required to report any casino chip-cash exchanges that exceed 1 million yen (about US$9,500). Moreover, the players who make such exchanges will have their names, birthdays, and addresses recorded and passed on to the Casino Management Board.

This is intended as an AML measure, particularly in light of the fact that Japanese newspapers have already reported that yakuza groups are considering how they might use casino chip-cash exchanges for the purposes of money laundering.

This reporting requirement is said to be similar to regulations in Nevada and Singapore.
