Government still deciding on casino closure extension

The Macau government is still deliberating on whether to extend the casino closure set to end on February 19, 2020, though it has announced a number of economic assistance measures for its residents.

The announcement was made during a press event with Macau’s Secretary for Economy and Finance Lei Wai Nong on Thursday.

According to Lei, the Macau government will put forth a series of economic assistance measures, including reducing and exempting taxes and fees from companies and residents, launch support and credit bonus for SMEs, reinforce measures for the well being of the population, proving support to vulnerable families, strengthen technical training actions, and launching electronic consumer vouchers (MOP3,000) to boost the recovery of the economy.

The vouchers will be able to be used in restaurants and retail establishments, such as supermarkets and shopping malls.

“It can be used for catering, retail or groceries, but only in Macau,” he said. “The intention is to help enterprises survive through consumption.”

When asked about whether the casino closures would be extended, Lei said this would not be simply an administrative decision, and required “deep consideration.”

It is widely believed in the wider industry that the closure will be extended.
