Govt issues warning to telecom companies about online gambling

Myanmar’s Ministry of Transport and Communication has issued a warning to all private telecommunication companies to “stay out” of illegal online gambling, or face being shut down, local media reports.

The warning was made by the director-general of the Ministry of Transport and Communication’s Department of Post and Telecommunications (DPT), Soe Thein.

“This statement will be sent to all telecommunications companies, and if they break the rules, they will be shut down,” he warned.

According to a report from Myanmar Times, Mr. Thein said that most online gamers play with mobile phone top-ups, which are fraudulent. The director-general has called for all telecom companies to play their part in preventing illegal online gambling.

Should a company break the rules by doing business with an online gaming company, directly or indirectly, they will face legal action without warning, he said.
