Gujarat HC dismisses club’s petition to run poker and rummy

The Gujarat High Court has dismissed a petition seeking permission for poker and rummy to be played at a city club, local media reports.

The petitioner, Samir Patel, asked the high court to issue a ‘no objection certificate’ or a license for his club so that it could run a poker room.

The petition was filed under the grounds that card games, such as poker and rummy, are skill-based and not gambling.

However, on Friday, Justice J B Pardiwala dismissed the petition at the admission stage.

According to Glaws, a separate bench of the Gujarat High Court headed by Justice Rajesh Shukla is expected to deliver its verdict on the legality of poker and degree of skill involved in the game after hearing the merits of the matter for several months.

Justice Shukla is expected to deliver a conclusive and detailed judgment on the legality of poker on November 23 in response to special civil applications filed by KN Suresh (on behalf of the Indian Poker Association), AAA Gaming, Hotel Ramada, Dominance Games Pvt. Ltd.  and other poker clubs.
