Hard Rock International has won the license to build a EUR2 billion ($2.3 billion) IR near Tarragona, eastern Spain.
The resort is expected to attract up to two million visitors a year and will be built over the next five years.
The complex will include one of the biggest casinos in Europe, with 1,200 machines and 100 tables. It will have two hotels with a total of 1,100 rooms and a commercial zone with 75 shops. There will also be a concert space that can accommodate 15,000 people.
Hard Rock estimates the IR will bring an economic benefit of about EUR1.3 million to the region and will create 11,500 jobs, including those during the construction phase.
“For many years, the world’s biggest gaming companies have been trying for the opportunity to bring an IR to Europe,” Hard Rock CEO Jim Allen was cited as saying in Spanish media. “We are proud that Hard Rock was chosen to bring its world class entertainment brand to the region.”
Melco Resorts & Entertainment had also been interested in bidding for the license, but pulled out to focus on its IR project in Cyprus. Both companies are seeking a license in Japan.
