Head of rights group fears Macau Jockey Club to be redeveloped for profit

The head of animal rights group Anima fears the two-year extension of the horse-racing concession will end up with the Macau Jockey Club being redeveloped for profit, TDM reported.

Albano Martins told the media station that an upcoming study on the impact of the Canidrome greyhound track would likely recommend that it shuts down.

The decision to redevelop the club and improve facilities, announced by the club’s CEO earlier this month, comes despite the operator's huge accumulated losses and criticism from animal rights groups.

Martins fears the Jockey Club's land will be turned over for real estate development.

“What those gentlemen [Macau Jockey Club operator] want and that two-year extension proves it, in a way: the government decided to kick the can down the road to give them time to file a few more papers and keep the plot. That's an area of 404,000 square metres, it's no joke. What will happen is more real estate, more real estate and to benefit the same people,” Martins said.
