HK police break up HK$120 million bookmaking syndicate

Police in Hong Kong have broken up a suspected triad-controlled bookmaking syndicate that could have taken in more that HK$120 million in illegal football bets. The Hong Kong police have arrested the alleged ringleader and two other figures while raiding a hotel room the authorities suspect was used as the operation's headquarters, according to reports. The raid came shortly after the game between England and Denmark, with police seizing more than HK$10 million in cash and betting records reportedly totalling millions more. Police say the cash seized during the operation was the "biggest sum in a crackdown of this kind in recent years". The investigation indicates the illegal betting ring had been in operation for about a year.. SCMP
