Hong Kong government warns of further bridge delays

The Hong Kong government says a bridge linking Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macau will not be finished next year as scheduled.

The bridge is seen as a major game changer for Macau, opening up access by road to Hong Kong and southern China, as well as providing an easy 30-minute link to Hong Kong’s international airport.

Hong Kong Secretary for Transport and Housing Anthony Cheung was cited by local media as saying the judicial review for the environmental impact assessment has caused the entire construction to start one year later than the schedule.

He also pointed to instability of raw material supply, labour shortages, height limit of planes and the complexity of the geology of the site.

The reports didn’t give a new timetable for completion of the project, but said the Macau government also plans to carry out its own assessment.
