Illegal internet casinos busted in Tokyo and Nagoya

This past weekend saw two separate police raids against illegal internet casinos in Tokyo and Nagoya, the latest in an ongoing series of such legal actions in major Japanese cities. The two raids occurred within a three-hour period.

On the late evening of the 11th, three men were arrested at a shop called Gold in Tokyo’s Sumida Ward. Among those arrested was the suspected de facto manager, Yuji Tani, who is a former member of a yakuza gang. Police were also able to seize a customer list with about two hundred names on it.

The police investigation suggests that the illegal gambling began at Gold from around January and was producing about JPY2.5 million (about $23,000) in monthly income.

In Nagoya, four men—two employees and two customers—were arrested shortly after midnight on the 12th at a shop called Jump, suspected of being an illegal internet casino. The police say that illegal internet baccarat games were played on the nine personal computers at the shop, and they seized JPY2.7 million (about $25,000) which they believe to be the illicit proceeds.
