Illegal IPI workers want more compensation

37 illegal workers who worked on Imperial Pacific’s casino and hotel have refused an offer to be paid and sent back home to China, Saipan Tribune reports.

According to IPI legal counsel Charles McDonald, there are currently ongoing negotiations between the 37 workers and the CNMI Department of Labor on their compensation settlement.

It is understood that the workers were initially offered compensation by IPI after learning the companies that hired them through a third-party subcontractor, MCC International and Beilida Overseas (CNMI) Ltd. reportedly fled the island.

The workers were offered  minimum wage plus overtime and a one-way ticket back to China, but refused to accept the offer, deeming the amount to be too low.

The workers have demanded to be paid for not only the work they have done with the casino, but also for the time they have remained without work on Saipan.

“The workers [have] some issues with the calculations,” said McDonald “[We’re] hoping to resolve it soon.”
