Imperial Pacific may request deadline extension

Imperial Pacific may request another extension to the deadline set for completion of 329 rooms for its hotel project, local media cited Commonwealth Casino Commission Executive Director Edward Deleon Guerrero as saying.

He added no official request has yet been made.

The company has already been granted one extension until August this year, after saying it had faced difficulties due to the disruption caused by Typhoon Soudelor in 2015 and by labor shortages. The project has been beset by difficulties, with its lead contractor hiring thousands of illegal workers, brought in from China on tourist visas.

According to the Marianas Variety report, Keith Stewart, president of IPI’s new contractor, Pacific Rim, told the casino commission on Thursday that they are assessing the project, which is said to be 64.8 percent complete.

The new contractor is bringing in workers from the Philippines and Taiwan and will be able to complete 250 rooms by the deadline. It is currently in talks with the operator to determine a safe timeline for completion.

Deleon Guerrero said any request for another extension must be for a good reason. “Among the reasons is lack of skilled labor but that has been resolved already, and it’s just a matter of time before all of them will show up. Some are already here and more are showing up next week.”
