India roundup: fantasy sports and Kerala lottery


The High Court of Punjab and Haryana has ruled that online fantasy games require skill and therefore can’t be considered gambling, which is illegal.

The observations were made by Justice Amit Rawal recently after a resident of Chandigarh, Varun Gumber, approached the court claiming that he had been a victim of illegal gambling on fantasycricket.dream11.com.

Meanwhile, the Mizoram government has called off sale of its lottery in Kerala, a report by News18 channel on Friday said. Mizoram withdrew its lottery from Kerala in view of the LDF government in Kerala objecting to its sale in the state, The government claimed there were irregularities in the printing and distribution of Mizoram lottery tickets in Kerala.

Kerala finance minister Thomas Isaac said the withdrawal was a triumph of the determination shown by the LDF government to save the state from the ‘lottery mafia’.
