IR Implementation Bill headed for early July enactment

Reports Tuesday revealed that the ruling coalition is planning to extend the Ordinary Diet Session by several weeks in order to assure passage of the IR Implementation Bill as well as a controversial labor policy bill. This takes all drama out of the matter—the IR legislation is now near certain to be enacted in early July.

Currently, the Diet session is scheduled to end on June 20. But rather than race against the clock, the ruling coalition is opting to move the goalposts in order to secure their victory.

The Asahi Shimbun reports that the session will probably be extended until July 10, although other media reports are less definite, suggesting a two or three week extension.

At any rate, with an overwhelming majority in both houses of the Diet, and the enthusiastic support of the Osaka-based Japan Innovation Party as well, there are now no major obstacles to passage.
